The American Comparative Literature Association's 2026 Annual Meeting

The 2026 Annual Meeting will be held in person at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, February 26 - March 1, 2026.

Undergraduate Seminar: UnReal/Real

ACLA is committed to fostering the next generation of scholars and providing them with the opportunity to participate in a major scholarly conference at an early stage in their academic careers. The Undergraduate Seminar is designed to enrich students’ academic development and introduce them to diverse perspectives and methodologies in the field of comparative literature under the guidance of this year’s seminar chair, ACLA Second Vice President Huda Fakhreddine.

This seminar offers students in the humanities the invaluable opportunity to present their research, engage in academic discussions, and network with fellow undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars from around the world. The Annual Meeting offers a wide array of seminars, workshops, and other sessions, allowing students to explore topics that resonate with their academic pursuits and hone the research interests that will propel them into the next stages of their careers.

This year, the seminar's theme is "UnReal/Real.” How does literature negotiate the relationship between the real and the unreal in the context of genocide, state violence, and collective trauma? Literature has long wrestled with the limits of representation, the inadequacy of language to bear witness, and the urgency of expressing the inexpressible. From mythic frameworks that attempt to give shape to historical catastrophe, to surreal and speculative modes that reveal the uncanny logic of destruction, writers have turned to the unreal—not only to escape reality, but also to account for it and confront it.
